Sushi

I'm taking a break from the stories of shady things I do behind my parents' backs and instead going in a completely different direction this week: my favorite food! I love to eat sushi and always have. Since it isn't a part of traditional Chinese cuisine, we rarely eat it in my family, and as a result I've always been jealous of the other Asian kids that brought in homemade sushi for lunch. I never knew why I like it, I just knew sushi was the best tasting food to ever exist and I always craved it. Imagine if I asked you to describe exactly why you liked your favorite food. It would be pretty difficult. We could easily describe foods objectively using physical properties like flavor, texture, and smell, but it's hard to try to put our finger on exactly why it tastes good. After contemplating this deep philosophical question on the walk back from Kenney, I think I have it figured out. It combines a variety of different tastes into an easily consumable medium. Eating sushi has the same addictive quality of eating snack food; it's so convenient that you can just eat one, then another, and another, until you lose count. After gulping down each piece you don't feel satisfied and the next piece is there tempting you. Then there's the way sushi combines many contrasting flavors and textures. In the Philadelphia Roll–the savory chewiness of salmon, the smooth mild sweetness of cream cheese, the crunchiness of cucumber, and the soft stickiness of rice are all mixed together in one tiny bite-sized piece. But there's even more: the sauces they put that have a tangy sweet and spicy taste, as well as the strong spicy taste of wasabi. So yeah that's my best attempt at why I love to eat sushi. Take a go at describing your favorite foods in the comments.

  1. I hate sushi, I absolutely dread it. In fact, I hate seafood in general UNLESS its shui ju yu. I don't know why, but I have just never liked the taste, seaweed, crab, fish, shrimp, all are a big yuck for me.

For my favourite food, its probably anything that is in spicy hot pot.

  2. Sushi is delicious. The dish is quite unique as there are so many different combinations you can have. You can make hundreds, if not more, of different types of rolls. I really like how eating sushi introduces a beautiful combination of experiences in your mouth: the sweetness of the sauce, the fishy taste of the meat, and the crispness of the seaweed. Unfortunately, my family doesn't eat sushi that often, so like you, I am often jealous of my luckier classmates.

  3. I concur with Kevin--seafood can be a bit yucky, sushi in particular. I like salmon and crab, but the times that I've tried sushi have not been pleasant experiences. You seem to really like it, though, so maybe I should give sushi another try.

  4. Sushi isn't my favorite thing ever, but seafood in general is great. You can prepare it in so many different ways that it's easy to find something that's good. I think you did a good job describing the variety you can find just within sushi.

  5. I've always thought sushi is that type of hit or miss food. Most people you meet fall under either hating it or loving it. For me I kind of fall in a middle category because although there are some Sushi I love, there are ten or more for ones I can't even eat without regretting it the moment after.
